Entry fee for Junior fiddle divisions $10.00

Entry fee for all other competitions $15.00

 

  • A limit of 40 contestants per contest.  Contestants may pre-register online.  Registration completed when entry fee is received.
  • Judges will not see contestants during performance and will hear only contestant and not accompaniment.
  • All decisions of the judges and the Contest Committee are final.

No changes in the rules will be made under any circumstances.

Fiddle Contest Rules

  1. The Junior State Championship, the Open Division and the Jr. Juniors Division will be a one-round competition.  The highest scoring senior (60 years or older) in the Open Division will win the Senior competition.  The State Championship will consist of two rounds.  Five finalists will be selected from the first round competition to compete for the State Championship.  Relatives of judges will be ineligible for competition.  All decisions of the judges and Contest Committee are final.
  2. Each contestant will draw for order of appearance prior to the start of each contest (round).  Trading of position will not be allowed.  Each contestant is responsible for being on time for his or her turn to play.
  3. Points earned in the preliminary round will carry over to the final round and the combined scores will be used to determine the winner.

 

 

Each contestant must play three tunes in the following order:  (a) hoedown; (b) waltz; and (c) tune of choice (something other than a breakdown or a waltz).  Performance will not exceed 6 minutes (a deduction of 20 points will be made to any performance exceeding the allotted time).  Contestants must give a list of tunes (in order) to the Emcee at the beginning of their performance. 

  1. Contestants are not allowed to speak.  Contestants will be disqualified if they speak during their performance!
  2. Contestants may not have more than three accompanists.
  3. Show tunes will not be allowed in competition (“Listen to the Mockingbird”, “Orange Blossom Special” or “Black Mountain Rag”).  Cross tuning will not be allowed.
  4. Contact microphones, pickups or any amplified instruments will not be allowed.
  5. Contestants will be scored on:  “Rhythm, Timing, Tone and Intonation” – 50 points; “Authenticity, Taste, Expression and Execution” – 50 points; for a total of 100 points per song per judge (three judges).  A perfect score round will result in 900 points possible (see officials for definitions of judging criteria at registration table).
  6. In the event that a contestant breaks a string, they will be given a two-minute period to replace the string.  The contestant may then restart the tune in which the string was broken.
  7. All commercial recording rights are reserved and shall become the property of the Tulsa State Fair Fiddler’s Contest Committee.  Signing of registration for the contest shall waive contestants’ rights.  The Oklahoma State Fiddle Championship and the Junior Division Fiddle contest are sanctioned by the Oklahoma Fiddle Association Northeast Chapter and the National Fiddler Hall of Fame, Tulsa, Oklahoma.

 

Flatpicking Guitar and Mandolin Contest Rules

  1. The State Flatpicking Guitar and Mandolin Championships will consist of two rounds.  Five finalists will be selected from the first round competition to compete for the Championship.  Relatives of judges will be ineligible for competition.  All decisions of the judges and the Contest Committee will be final.
  2. Each contestant will draw for order of appearance prior to the start of each contest.  Trading of position will not be allowed.  Each contestant is responsible for being on time for his or her turn to play.
  3. Points earned in the preliminary round will carry over to the final round and the combined scores will be used to determine the winner.
  4. Each contestant must be prepared to play two tunes in a preliminary round and play two tunes for finals.  Performance will not exceed 5 minutes (a deduction of 20 points will be made to any performance exceeding the allotted time).  Contestants must give a list of tunes (in order) to the Emcee at the beginning of their performance.
  5. Contestants are not allowed to speak.  Contestants will be disqualified if they speak during their performance!
  6. Contestants may have one accompanist.
  7. All contestants must play with a flat pick (plectrum pick).  No finger picking will be allowed.  No combination of flat picking and finger picking will be allowed.
  8. Only standard tuning at A=440 will be allowed.  Guitarist may use standard capos (no capos which allow the alteration of individual string such as Third Hand Capos).
  9. Contact microphones, pickups or any amplified instruments will not be allowed.
  10. Contestants will not be allowed to take more than one instrument on stage.
  11. Contestants will be scored on:  “Arrangement” – 40 points; “Execution, Tuning” – 40 points; “Show Value” – 10 points; “Overall Expression” – 10 points.  Total of 100 points per song per judge (three judges).  A perfect score round will result in 600 points possible (see officials for definitions of judging criteria at registration table).
  12. In the event that a contestant breaks a string, they will be given a two-minute period to replace the string.  The contestant may then restart the tune in which the string was broken.

  3. Points earned in the preliminary round will carry over to the final round and the combined scores will be used to determine the winner.
  4. Each contestant must be prepared to play two tunes in a preliminary round and play two tunes for finals.  Performance will not exceed 5 minutes (a deduction of 20 points will be made to any performance exceeding the allotted time).  Contestants must give a list of tunes (in order) to the Emcee at the beginning of their performance.

  7. CONTESTANT MAY PLAY ANY STYLE OF MUSIC, BUT FLAT PICK AND SLIDE TECHNIQUES ARE NOT ACCEPTABLE.  Contestants may use thumb and finger picks.  NO FLAT PICK.  A 12-string guitar is acceptable.  Special tunings will be allowed.
  8. Only standard tuning at A=440 will be allowed.  Guitarist may use standard capos (no capos which allow the alteration of individual string such as Third Hand Capos).
