The Calf Scramble journey starts during Tulsa State Fair PRCA Rodeo as five calves are turned loose with 15 eager 4-H & FFA Youth chasing after the dream of catching a calf. As kids and calves are scattered and running in every direction, the Calf Scramble becomes one of the most chaotic, unscripted events of the Rodeo. Five scramblers must halter the calf and pull, push, tug or coax the calf into the winner’s circle.

Surprisingly, catching a calf might be the easiest part. The fifteen youth who catch a calf are awarded a $1,500 certificate to purchase a steer to show at the Tulsa State Fair. Raising and showing this steer becomes a yearlong project as the scrambler sees to the grooming, feeding and care of the animal. The exhibitor returns to the Tulsa State Fair the following year for a special competition. There are four phases each Scrambler is evaluated on: Recording Keeping, Live Evaluation, Showmanship and Carcass Evaluation. The top five Calf Scramble Exhibitors overall are awarded scholarship money.
Each year, 15 certificates are awarded. The first Calf Scramble was in 2005 and since over $60,000 has been awarded in certificates, scholarships and awards to youth across the state of Oklahoma.
